Madakaripura is the tallest waterfall in Java, dropping 200 meters into the base of a canyon whose walls nearly close overhead, so it feels like standing inside a giant cave. Its name links to the legend of Prime Minister Gajah Mada, believed to have retreated here.
From the parking area it is a 20 minute walk along a stream with slippery stones after rain, so we always bring trekking sandals and a light rain shell. We slot it in almost every time after the Bromo program wraps.
Highlights
- A 200 meter fall at the canyon's end
- Rock walls closing in like a cave
- The hermitage trail of Gajah Mada
- A refreshing wall of mist
Includes
- Local motorbike shuttle from the parking area
- Entrance ticket
- Trekking sandals and rain shell

Difficulty: Easy, stony path. Year round, avoid heavy rain days.
