Tumpak Sewu Waterfall

Lumajang, East Java

Tumpak Sewu falling in a curtain from a wide green cliff
Duration
1 day, dawn start
Difficulty
Challenging, rocky trail
From
IDR 295K
Departure
Malang

Tumpak Sewu is often called the Niagara of Java, though it looks more like a curtain: water drops from gaps along a cliff nearly one hundred meters wide at the foot of Semeru. From the panorama point you see the whole curtain from afar. Descend to the base and you stand where the water lands, damp from its mist.

The descent is dirt and rock with rope holds at a few points, so shoes with real grip are mandatory. We always assign a local guide who knows the trail by heart, and this trip is usually paired with Madakaripura or run solo with a dawn start from Malang.

Highlights

  • A 100 meter water curtain on the Semeru cliff
  • Goa Tetes cave behind the curtain
  • A blue pool at the base of the cliff
  • The panorama angle from Tikus view

Includes

  • 4x4 transport on the winding road
  • Local guide and head protection
  • Trekking sandals or grip shoes
  • Entrance tickets and parking
  • A hot lunch after the descent

Difficulty: Challenging, rocky trail. February to April, when the flow is fullest.
