Ijen offers two very different moments inside one crater. Leave at midnight, descend to the crater floor before 02.00, and wait in the dark as blue flames rise from sulfur cracks, a phenomenon that exists in only two places on earth.
Toward morning, the scene shifts to the turquoise acid lake glowing as the sun climbs, with the Bali strait and Mount Raung in the distance. The trail is roughly two hours up and one hour down to the rim, so it needs basic fitness and feet used to long walks.
